The best tire blowout is the one that never happens, which is why you should check your tire pressure at least once a month. Unfortunately, all the tire maintenance in the world can’t guarantee that you’ll never experience a blowout. In this video, Dr. Bill Van Tassel, Manager of Driver Training Programs for AAA, discusses how to maintain control of your vehicle in the event of a tire blowout. First, remain calm and stabilize the vehicle. Maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and ease off of the accelerator. Next, gently apply the brakes and pull the vehicle off to the side of the road. If possible, try to park your vehicle at least five feet from the road and call roadside assistance for a tow truck.
