Top Causes of Premature and Uneven Tire Wear

Last updated 5 years ago

It’s normal for your vehicle’s tires to wear over time. However, infrequent maintenance can cause your tires to wear unevenly or prematurely. If your tires become too worn, you may be required to get replacements sooner than you would like. If you’re not careful, overly-worn tires could lead to a blowout or a terrible accident. Here are a few of the top causes of premature and uneven tire wear that you should watch out for:

Misaligned wheels

If your vehicle vibrates or pulls to the right or left when you hold the steering wheel straight, your wheels could be out of alignment. If you allow your wheels to remain out of alignment, you’ll likely see your tires begin to wear on one side. For the sake of your tires and your safety, you should keep your wheels in alignment at all times.

Underinflated tires

If your tires are below the recommended air pressure, you’ll likely notice signs of premature wear along the edges. Conversely, over-inflated tires tend to experience uneven wear along the center strip. Under- and over-inflated tires can also affect your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. For these reasons, it’s important that you check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Lack of rotation

Since your rear and front tires move differently, they tend to wear in slightly different ways. In order to encourage even wear, you should swap the front and rear tires once every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. If you wait too long, you may need to get a whole new set of tires.

Improper balancing

In an ideal situation, your tire’s center of gravity is the same as its center of rotation. If your tire is incorrectly installed, or if it somehow gets knocked loose, it will experience a strange wear pattern. Luckily, a skilled tire specialist should be able to solve the problem quickly.
