4 Common Car Noises and their Likely Causes

Last updated 5 years ago

There are a lot of ways to tell when your vehicle is in need of automotive repair, but one of the easiest ways is to just listen. When things aren’t working right beneath the hood of your car, strange noises will develop. To help you make sense of what’s going on with your vehicle, here are four common noises that typically mean your car is in need of automotive repair:

  1. Hissing – If you notice a hissing sound coming from under the hood, it could be an indication that there is a vacuum leak. If the rubber or plastic vacuum line or fitting has split or fallen apart, it will create a hissing sound when the engine is running. This noise is particularly noticeable at idle speed, but you may also notice it when you are accelerating.
  2. Squealing – There are multiple reasons why you might hear a squealing noise when driving your car—and none of them are good. If you notice a squealing noise when you apply the brakes, it means that the brake pads are beginning to wear out. Squealing from beneath the hood, however, means that an engine belt is worn out and in need of a replacement.
  3. Knocking – Rattling or knocking sounds from under the hood is an indication that something is going wrong with the way the engine is combusting fuel. In most cases, engine rattle is caused by carbon buildup due to the age of the engine. However, in some cases engine rattle is caused by overheating—which should be diagnosed by an automotive repair technician as soon as possible to avoid serious engine damage.
  4. Clicking – Clicking and tapping noises coming from the front of your car are typically the result of a problem in the upper valve train. The causes range from worn out parts to low oil pressure. To avoid serious automotive repair, have your vehicle checked out by a professional mechanic the first time you notice clicking or tapping noises coming from the engine.
